  • 8. But Honduras remains one of the West’s poorest countries. The average yearly income is $1,845.
  • 9. In spite of this, we believe that education focused on the dignity of every human person that will liberate people and bring opportunities for change.
  • 10. That is the mission of the Olancho Aid Foundation.
  • 11. OAF empowers Honduran youth to transform themselves, their communities and their country through education.
  • 12. Welcome to Escuelita Nazareth, the first and only school for special needs in Olancho.
  • 14. A non-profit school dedicated to offering education to youth of all ages with special needs.
  • 16. These students come from families with no resources to send their children to school. There is nowhere else in Olancho to provide these services.
  • 19. At Escuelita Nazareth we serve deaf students, mentally handicapped students, students with learning disabilities, and students with Down syndrome
  • 21. Welcome to Centro Escolar Santa Clara.
  • 23. We believe that students should be challenged academically and develop intellectual skills that are both creative and progressive.
  • 24. Students learn grammar, social studies and religion in Spanish-language classrooms taught by Honduran teachers.
  • 26. And learn reading, language arts, science and math in English-language classrooms taught by North American volunteers.
  • 27. Students on scholarship study alongside tuition-paying students.
  • 28. Come to Santa Clara, and you’ll hear first graders singing “Head, Shoulders, Knees, Toes”…
  • 30. You’ll see 4 th graders learning how to multiply 2-digit numbers…
  • 32. And you’ll hear a spirited discussion of novel in the 7 th grade classroom…
  • 34. Don’t forget soccer at recess!
  • 36. Welcome to Cardinal Rodriguez Institute, a private Catholic educational institution committed to improving the quality of secondary education for youth in Olancho.
  • 37. Each year, Santa Clara has added a grade level. This year, we added 7 th grade. The bilingual classes will continue to be added each year at Cardinal Rodriguez, up to 12 th grade.
  • 38. The long term goal of Olancho Aid is to prepare those students to study at U.S. universities and return to Honduras to make positive contributions to their society.
  • 40. Moral, civic and spiritual values are emphasized to students to promote leadership, through the curriculum and in service projects.
  • 42. And woven through all three projects, is the instruction and example of Catholic values.
  • 45. We are always looking for volunteers with a variety of different skills, from teaching to fundraising to software development and many other areas.
  • 46. Our volunteers live in community together, learning about the vibrancy of Honduras together…
  • 51. And making lasting friendships along the way…
  • 53. As they say here, “ Olancho is easy to enter… … and hard to leave.”
