Worcester has a dual tax classification system that sets different – much higher – rates for commercial and industrial property than it does for residences. Over the past couple weeks, city councilors have been expected to set the new rates for 2016 but at both hearings, the vote has been postponed. Here’s what’s at stake. Worcester competes with neighboring cities and towns to attract businesses to our community. When deciding on a location, many factors are considered, not the least of which is the cost of doing business. An important part of that cost is a business’ tax liability. The higher it goes, the more likely that businesses will choose a differently community. We need your vote to ensure an equitable tax rate.
