SATURDAY 22nd NOVEMBER 2008 ISS PETER DAWSON BENEVOLENT CUP- ROUND 2 CARLISLE CITY 3-0 CLEATOR MOOR CELTIC RESERVES City’s opponents are in the Premier division of the County League, but struggling so far with just one win from seven league games. City soon established their superiority and were ahead in the 9th minute. Good play from Holliday on the left saw his cross reach the head of McDermott and he nodded the ball past the Celtic keeper. Within seconds, Clarke was testing the Celtic keeper with a shot from 25 yards. In the 15th minute, Holliday couldn’t get out of the way of S. Bell’s shot close to the goal-line and, on 19 minutes, McDermott’s left-wing cross found Murphy but the shot was wide from 12 yards. After 25 minutes, a fine ball from S. Bell freed McDermott on the left, and his cross found Holliday in a great position eight yards from goal. Unfortunately, Holliday’s finish was straight at the visiting keeper. Holliday then saw his shot pushed wide for a corner as City continued to dominate. Celtic threatened for the first time after 29 minutes when City struggled to clear their lines. The shot from the edge of the penalty box was not far wide. City were back on the attack as S. Bell’s cross was headed by Holliday, but again saved by the keeper. A good interception by C. Bell on 34 minutes stopped a promising Celtic attack and Driver had to drop back to clear for a corner. The flag-kick was well struck and the Celtic player had a good chance, but headed straight at Greenall in the City goal. In the 39th minute, Holliday zipped a cross-shot from the left wing that only required a final touch, but no-one could provide it. McDermott saw his shot from inside the box saved by the keeper and, just before the break, Holliday’s 40-yard run saw him round the keeper but his ball into the box was cleared by the visiting defence. There was still time for S. Bell to flick a header wide from McDermott’s left wing cross. HALF-TIME- CITY 1-O CELTIC RESERVES After 55 minutes, Holliday curled a shot to the keeper from 15 yards. Watson then set off on a strong run from his left-back position and played a neat one-two with Clarke, and the Celtic keeper again had to snuff out the danger. Clarke had been trying his luck from distance on a few occasions and he was wide from 25 yards in the 60th minute. City’s first change saw Coulthard replace the limping Holliday. City were close to a second goal after 65 minutes when Watson and S. Bell combined, and the big striker watched his shot trickle agonisingly wide. Clarke ran well from midfield before again testing the keeper with a 20-yard shot, that was brilliantly tipped away. The resulting corner saw a scramble in the Celtic box before Coulthard fired wildly over. The second goal eventually arrived after 69 minutes as Driver found S. Bell in space and the striker made no mistake with his finish from 10 yards. More goals lookedlikely as S. Bell and Clarke moved threateningly into the Celtic area, before the outstanding keeper saved again, and Murphy spooned the rebound over the bar. City made more substitutions with Weedall on for Murphy, and Young replacing Driver. In the 77th minute, a cross from Green deceived the keeper and almost sneaked in, but rebounded off the far post. City rounded off their victory after 85 minutes when a neat pass from Coulthard found McDermott, who finished easily for his second goal of the game. There could have been more goals as Clarke saw his shot brilliantly pushed wide by the keeper and Green headed at the keeper when well placed to score. Ironically, the final action saw Celtic almost grab a consolation when a header rebounded off Greenall but was hacked to safety. It was a fine performance by the City side who could easily have doubled the score. TEAM- Greenall, Green, Watson, C. Bell, Rush, Murphy, Driver, Clarke, S. Bell, Holliday, McDermott. SUBS- Coulthard, Weedall, Young, Harding.
