Newsletter 1 St. Peter News St. Peter Lutheran Church, Bassett, NEPastors John & Melody Brink  jbrink-ne@hotmail.com melody_325@yahoo.com January 2013 T HIS I SSUE   1. Wise words from Pastor John2. Announcements3. Extras4. Prayers, Birthdays & Anniversaries, Lay Worker Schedule Happy New Year! It’s a phrase that never getsold, even though we say it every year. It nevergets old because in that simple statement, we areexpressing hope, and hope is what keeps us going. To say those words is to see the future as hope-filled. And the future here at St John’s and St Peter is hope-filled. We see that hope in the eyesof the children who sit on the steps each Sunday morning for the children’s sermon. We hear that hope in the voices of all who gather for worship and sing out in God’s praises. We feel that hope in the warm greetings from one another as wegather for fellowship. But that hope doesn’t stay here in our buildings! The hope we see, hear, and feel radiatesthroughout our communities in all that we do to  bring Christ’s love to those we meet . We expressthat love and our hope when we offer our help atthe food bank, deliver meals to those in need, when we open our doors for all the kids for theAfter School Program and Vacation Bible School, and in so many other ways. The hope that we know in Jesus Christ flows outeven further into statewide ministries. Through theNebraska Synod, we touch those who findthemselves being released from prisons and nothaving much hope, we start new ministriesthrough mission start congregations and ministriesto reach out to the many immigrants reaching ourgreat state, and we provide camps and missionexperiences for kids - just to name a few.But where we see hope spoken on a truly grandscale is through the work we do as part of theELCA. We battle hunger and poverty both here inthe United States and around the world. Wesupport over 200 missionaries, walking hand inhand with churches around the world to accompany them as they seek to further God’s kingdom in their own lands. Through ourpartnership with the ELCA, we are addressingAIDS in Uganda, we continue to rebuild homesdestroyed by hurricanes on the Gulf Coast, we arereaching out to those affected by hurricane Sandy, and supporting schools in the Holy Land and newcongregations in Malawi. These are truly globalministries in which we play an active part.Happy New Year! May it truly be a year filledwith the hope, love, and mercy found only throughJesus Christ. In Christ,Pastor John  Newsletter 2 “Like” us on Facebook! At one house it seemed obvious that someone was at home, but no answer came to his repeated knocks at the door. Therefore, he took out a business card and wrote 'Revelation 3:20' on the back of it and stuck it in the door.   When the offering was processed the following Sunday, he found that his card had been returned. Added to it was this cryptic message, 'Genesis3:10.'    Reaching for his Bible to check out the citation, he broke up in gales of laughter.Revelation3:20 begins 'Behold, I stand at the door and knock.' Genesis3:10 reads, 'I heard your voice in the garden and I was afraid for I was naked.'    Shirley & MarcyA mother was concerned about her kindergarten sonwalking to school. He didn't want his mother to walkwith him.She wanted to give him the feeling that he had someindependence but yet know that he was safe. So shehad an idea   of how to handle it. She asked a neighbor if she would please follow him to school in themornings, staying at a distance, so he probablywouldn't notice her. She said that since she was upearly with her toddler anyway, it would be a good way   for them to get some exercise as well, so she agreed. The next school day, the neighbor and her little girlset out following   behind Timmy as he walked toschool with another    neighbor girl he knew.
